Black feathers in saddle

What causes black feathers in saddle on blue reds and bb reds, and how do you go about fixing it in the breeding pen.

  • When males have black shafts all the way down to the skin, I believe this can throw black striping in hackle and saddle. The male line breeding male should show a little red in the shaft of sickles as it approaches the skin. The red not seen when the tail is held natural but if you dig down to the base you can see it. Of course the shafting in the male line females also helps to prevent the black striping in males. Of course this may be just my opinion and others may say different. LOL.
  • Thanks for the reply. I'll have to look at the shafts next year.
